Leaked Android Music app images and hands-on review

This morning, an updated version of the stock Android Music app was leaked along with a new version of Android Market. The new Music app, which is labeled 'version 3', is similar to the leaked build from December, but it has received a ton of polish -- and indeed, it looks almost ready for prime time.

Review: Sony Vaio T-Series Ultrabook

Sony already has one ultrabook on the market — and at prices ranging up to $3,000, the Vaio Z Series is the most expensive laptop in the category that you can buy.

To counterbalance the excess of its sky-high Vaio Z, Sony has another option for you. The scaled-back Vaio T Series is a little more restrained, offering a slimmed-down computing experience complete with third-generation Core i5 CPU for just 800 bones.

The specs aren’t exactly earth-shaking. A surprisingly dim 13.3-inch screen at 1366×768 pixels, the usual 1.7GHz Core i5, 4GB of RAM, and integrated graphics. One curiosity here is the hard drive, a hybrid model that adds 32GB of SSD storage to the 500GB traditional hard disk system. This helps to earn the system slightly better benchmark scores than you’d expect, but the numbers are generally in line with the competition.

Two sources talk of Apple iPhone event around September 12th, part sales back it up (update: one more clue)

Apple's plans for its next iPhone refresh may be getting very tangible, very quickly. It all started when iMore heard that Apple was preparing to hold an event unveiling the new hardware on September 12th, with a launch the following week on September 21st. Although the relative newcomer to the iPhone release date rumor game is still building its track record, that claim may have just gotten some extra meat: AllThingsD is joining in the chorus and touts its own sources pointing to an event in the same timeframe. While it's almost a month earlier in the year than Apple's iPhone 4S event was in 2011, it's supported by an Apple filing with the SEC showing a sharp uptick in supply purchasing during the spring, which it would need to start production for the fall. All of it is still rumor, of course, but past experience suggests that iOS fans may want to plan any September camping trips for the Apple Store line late in the month, not Labor Day weekend.

Update: Jim Dalrymple at The Loop, who's well-known for his accurate one-word confirmations and denials of rumors, just posted his trademark "yep."

Ask DLS: Cross-platform multiplayer games that work on Android and iOS

Here's one for our knowledgeable commenters: I recently bought my girlfriend an iPad. I, on the other hand, own an Android device. And now we're looking for games we can play using both devices.

There's no dearth of multiplayer games either for Android or for iOS. But finding multiplayer games that can cross the platform boundary is an entirely different matter.

Jay recently posted Words with Friends which is one such game. It's actually an ideal example, because it's turn-based so you don't necessarily both have to be next to your device at the same time (great for long-distance gaming).

But what other examples are there? What multiplayer games are there that let iOS users play with Android users?

Google Maps debuts higher resolution imagery around the world

While Google Earth recently impressed us with its 3D antics at Google I/O, its 2D counterpart, Google Maps is just as important. Today Maps sees its 2D imagery significantly upgraded in a number of countries, with higher resolution satellite pictures, aerial imagery and 45-degree shots.

Google says it's rolled out high-resolution aerial and satellite-based images for 25 cities and 25 "regions/countries." And new 45-degree perspective shots are now available in a total of 28 cities, 21 in the U.S. and 7 overseas. While perspective shots have yet to be rolled out to mobile, Android users can get access to the high-resolution top-down images right away by enabling the "Satellite" layer from within the Google Maps app.

Growing up Geek: Philip Berne

Welcome to Growing Up Geek, an ongoing feature where we take a look back at our youth and tell stories of growing up to be the nerds that we are. Today we have Philip Berne, who is currently Samsung's Marketing Manager for Technical Media and a regular contributor for Slashgear.

When I was in high school, I wanted to be a writer. My fallback plan was to get a degree in Psychology and become a therapist. If you were to time travel back to my high school days (which were not even 20 years ago) and tell me what I'd be doing today, I'd probably say something like:

"Are you crazy? That's not even a real job. And what the heck is a smartphone, anyway?"

I was a phone and gadget reviewer until I recently took a job with Samsung. Now I'm still reviewing phones -- I just review them a few months before anyone else. If you love phones and mobile tech as I do, it is certainly a dream job. I know how lucky I am. I wouldn't be here unless I had grown up geek. But in fact it wasn't luck that got me here (unless I mean luck of birth).

Growing up geek, in my case, meant growing up spoiled. I'm afraid to admit it, but I certainly had a spoiled childhood, especially when it came to toys and electronics. Let's go through my bona fides.
